The map shows Hull as a town of two distinct characters, the old original settlement of dense housing and narrow streets made completely into an island by the recent construction of the docks, and the new town with its grid pattern of wide streets and terraces. Prominent on another artificial island is the now long demolished Citadel. An interesting feature is the pattern of railway development with two main stations, one for the town in general, one for the western dock complex and a third for the newly constructed Victoria Dock, fed by its very own branch line in a long loop through the fields around the north of the town.
