Marlborough in 1881 still has a medieval feel about it. The pattern of a single street, market place development lined with low dwellings and backed by their individual burgage strips is very evident. This street has become one of the widest High Streets in England. The most striking feature on the map is the broad curve the recently constructed railway makes around the east of the town to serve the station before heading south again. The reason for this curve was to avoid a long and expensive viaduct across the valley of the Kennet.
